Do you remember your last day at school, or an old job? The urge to go wild and leave a lasting memory of yourself was hard to fight. From putting bubble bath in the water fountain, to leaving a hidden message on a colleague’s desk – it’s hard to resist.
Now imagine this: You are employed by Twitter and you have access to the most popular accounts in existence, from Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian, to Bill Gates and Donald Trump. Can you imagine the fun you could have? It appears that one (we can assume, former) employee at Twitter did see the potential of his position, after the account for the 45th President of the United States was deactivated for 11 minutes. Users were left perplexed as they tried to access the Commander-in-Chief’s account, only to receive the message “Sorry, that page doesn’t exist!”. For 11 minutes the account was non-existent, leaving many users questioning the cause. Had Twitter finally taken action against Trump for his controversial use of the social media platform? Or, had Trump shut his own account down? (Unlikely). Twitter initially stated that the takedown, which occurred at 4pm Pacific Time (11pm GMT), was “due to human error by a Twitter employee”. In a statement, released by Twitter they advised: “The account was down for 11 minutes, and has since been restored. We are continuing to investigate and are taking steps to prevent this from happening again.” However, as Twitter conspiracy theorists raced forward to claim foul play, Twitter revealed the truth…
“Through our investigation we have learned that this was done by a Twitter customer support employee who did this on the employee’s last day. We are conducting a full internal review.”
Immediately, Twitter erupted into a collected round of applause for the anonymous Twitter employee. “Review nothing, that guy’s a hero,” wrote one user, whilst another typed: “Please promote the person responsible for this outrage.”
“I hope you gave them a cake and the ‘Employee of the F*cking Decade’ Award!” said another. “Release their name so we can designate a holiday in their honor! At the very least make them
#POTUS #hero”, wrote one overjoyed user.
Others were quick to state that the unnamed employee had simply done “what Twitter should have done long ago,” referencing several highly controversial tweets from the US President which many believe have violated the Twitter terms of service.
Twitter has been inundated with requests from users to remove Trump’s account after he “threatened violence” in several posts, specifically aimed at North Korea. However, Twitter have turned a blind eye to these concerns, claiming that the “public interest” and “newsworthiness” of Trump’s tweets make them an exception to the rule.
Trump has previously come under fire for using Twitter via his own, personal Android phone, despite the Secret Service insisting that the president, like those before him, use an encrypted device.
With 40 million followers, Trump is a Twitter juggernaut that nobody seemed capable of stopping, until the anonymous Twitter employee stepped forward to do the job that nobody else seemed willing to do: shut him down.
There has been an outpouring of support for the employee, who we are sure will have an impressive career ahead of him, even if Twitter cannot see his potential!
So, what are you going to do to top this guy on your last day of work?
